Dagenham, Rainham and the streets around Becontree are full of solid-walled houses and bungalows that lose heat through every wall. This page follows one of our jobs on the Dagenham and Rainham side of East London, a chalet bungalow insulated and rendered all the way round.
Most of Dagenham was built between the wars, much of it as the Becontree estate, with Rainham and the streets towards Hornchurch filling in with semis and bungalows around the same time and after. Many of these homes have solid walls or very narrow cavities, and Becontree houses were built with a mix of construction methods, so we confirm what your walls are made of at survey before recommending anything.
Bungalows have a lot of outside wall for the floor area they enclose, so the walls are a big share of where the heat goes. That makes them some of the best candidates for external wall insulation.
Insulation boards were fixed to every wall, front, side and rear, then meshed and base-coated. On a bungalow the detail work is at the eaves and verges, where the boards have to finish neatly under the roof line, and round the bay, where every corner gets a bead so the edges stay crisp.
The white finish coat was sprayed on by machine, which gives an even texture across a long side wall with no joins or patchy areas. Windows, doors and the driveway are sheeted and taped first, and everything is cleaned down at the end of the day.
At the back, the rear extension and the dormer gable were insulated and rendered to match, so the whole house now sits under one finish. Leftover insulation boards are still stacked on the left, and the windows stay masked until the render has cured.
A surveyor visits, looks at the whole elevation and checks the wall build-up, damp risks, access and the planning position for your address. You get an itemised written quote that separates preparation, the system proposed, detailing around windows and sills, and scaffolding. On site the preparation is done first and properly, each coat is given its curing time, and the job ends with inspection, sign-off and warranty paperwork.

Yes, and bungalows often benefit most because they have so much outside wall for their size. The main things we check at survey are the roof overhang at the eaves and verges, the bay details and any extensions, so the boards can finish neatly all the way round.
Many are, but Becontree homes were built with a mix of construction methods, including some non-traditional ones. We confirm what your walls are made of at survey before recommending insulation, and tell you plainly if it is not the right answer.
It varies. Insulating and rendering an ordinary house is often permitted development, but flats, maisonettes, conservation areas and some estates have extra rules. We check the position for your address before work starts.
We work on solid-wall and period homes across East London and beyond, including:
