The houses we see in North London

Inner North London, around Islington, Camden and Haringey, is dominated by Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Many are solid brick with no cavity, some have stucco fronts, and plenty have been painted or patched several times over a century. Further out, in Enfield, Southgate, Palmers Green and Barnet, the stock turns to interwar semis and terraces, often finished in pebbledash or roughcast that is now at the end of its life.

The two need different answers. A stucco front in a conservation area is a different job from a pebbledash semi in Enfield, which is why we survey before we recommend anything.

What we do across North London

Smaller jobs count too

Not every job is a whole house. Front garden walls, piers and copings take a battering in North London streets, and a wall rendered properly with the right mouldings lifts the whole frontage.

How a job runs

A surveyor visits, looks at the whole elevation and checks the wall build-up, damp risks, access and the planning position for your address. You get an itemised written quote that separates preparation, the system or repair proposed, detailing around windows and sills, and scaffolding. On site the preparation is done first and properly, each coat is given its curing time, and the job ends with inspection, sign-off and warranty paperwork.

All of it, from Islington and Camden out to Enfield and Barnet. That includes Haringey, Finchley, Muswell Hill, Southgate, Palmers Green, Tottenham and the surrounding N, NW and EN postcodes.

Can you render a house in a conservation area?

Sometimes. Parts of North London, particularly around Hampstead, Highgate and Islington, are conservation areas where a change of finish may need planning permission. We check the status of your address at survey and tell you honestly if a render or insulation system is unlikely to be allowed.

My house is Victorian. Is external wall insulation suitable?

It can be, but not always. Many Victorian houses are solid brick, which is exactly where external insulation helps most. Decorative brickwork, a listed status or a conservation area can rule it out. We look at the wall, the detailing and the planning position before recommending anything.
